Welcome to Dallara398.com

Welcome!  We compete in the UK’s Monoposto Championship, which is intended to allow older single seater race cars to be used by ordinary people with sensible budgets. In 2007 we began our single seater racing career with a 1998 Reynard 883 Formula 3 car, and learnt very quickly that it’s not easy to be competitive. Championship wins followed in 2008 (Reynard), 2010 and 2011 (Dallara F398), and our next challenge awaits.

2011/2011 Winter Work

Here I’ll try and put photos now and again of the various jobs we do over the winter, from checking clutches to re-vinyling the new F3 Cup car… Essentially this is just a gallery, but I’ll try and explain in a few words what’s going on via each images title… Will add more as I go, so check back periodically.

Omicron Livery Competition

Design Our 2012 Livery

As you may be aware, we’re racing in the MSV F3 Cup Championship next year with a 2007 Dallara F307. With a new car comes a new livery, and whilst I’ve come up with a few designs I like, I thought opening it up to the world would be a good thing!!!

There aren’t many rules. Don’t be rude. Don’t be silly. And our main colour is red (indeed, both Omicron cars in Monoposto are entirely red, with flourescent flashes on the wings, mirrors etc). So download the image below and colour it in. When you’re done, email it to [email protected] along with some details, and I’ll take a look.

The Car | F307

This car is a Formula Three car from 2007, manufactured by the Italian company Dallara. As such it is referred to as the Dallara F307. As with all F3 cars from the last twenty years it is a carbon monocoque car, using a stressed engine on which the gearbox and rear suspension is hung. At both ends of the car, suspension is double wishbone, using slick racing tyres to provide grip. A full aerodynamic package, with wings, diffusers and airflow conditioners is used front and back to enhance the grip of the tyres. The rear suspension uses three springs (one in roll, two in ride) and two dampers to provide compliance, but at the front a single damper and coil spring is used for ride (a monoshock arrangement), with roll stiffness (compliance?) provided by the monoshock assembly sliding laterally against a stack of belleville washers.

2012 Calendar

2012 Calendars announced

Both the Monoposto Racing Club and MSV F3 Cup have announced their (provision) 2012 racing calenders now. I’ve combined the two below, and we’re pleased to see that no rounds clash with each other (i.e. same date, different circuits).
It’s a long old season though – 18 rounds for F3 Cup, and at the time of writing it’s not clear whether all or only ~16 rounds will count towards the final tally.

Publicity Day at WEX Photographic

As part of our end of season, championship winning celebrations, we were asked to take the Dallara F398 to the local WEX Photographic store where they were holding an open day. Our car, along with some owls and birds of prey were on display outside the store, giving the WEX customers something to photograph to test out their new equipment, and also to give the less enthusiastic customers (mostly children!) something more exciting to do that talk about stutter speeds.

Despite the chilly weather, there was a steady flow of people, most of which wanted to know something about the car (or the owls), and wanting to have a go in it for a few minutes. Hopefully everyone got what they wanted, and we did our best to encourage everyone to sit in the car and have their photo taken – Epson were offering free A3 prints of any photo taken on the day to show off their amazing photo printers, and I think several people left with a photo of them in a racing car.

Laura, Andrew and I were on hand to keep the queues of people interested, and I think we put on a good show, although I think we’ve identified (in typically racing team style) how to do better next time!!

A highlight of the day was getting Stewart Fielder, Marketing and Sales Director of WEX Photographic, to sit in the car and pose for his photo. Hopefully he got that printed out nice and large to hang up in his home (or, more likely, his toilet!). Hopefully WEX will ask us back again for their next open day, and maybe we can make it more of a motorsport event somehow – multiple cars, paddock awning, more ‘interactive’ stuff, and perhaps photogenic stuff laid out. The possibilities are nearly endless!

New Articles Coming Soon…

I haven’t forgotten! I just haven’t got round to finishing all the articles I need to write, or sorted out the photos various people (not least NorwichPhoto) took at the end of the season. Sorting out cars and sponsorship has been too important, but check back soon to see if I finished the typing….. Articles include: Silverstone GP meeting, Snetterton 300 meeting, Oulton Park F3 Cup meeting, a visit to Parma and probably a summary of our very successful season…
