Another few days of work have produced some large steps towards completion of the car prior to testing on the 12th March at Snetterton. The car is now fitted with the correct gears, the brakes and clutch are bled and checked, the steering rack has been checked over and refilled and, with the wheels and tyres fitted, we were able to drop the car onto the floor for the first time in a few months. Racing cars look a lot better sitting on the floor than 3 feet in the air on the rebuild trolley…The sponsor stickers are underway, and we’ve got updated software for the ECU that should help us during race days (how’s that for intriguing!?)… We’re researching lubrication technology to see if a few lb.ft of torque can be liberated from the drivetrain and engine, and we’ve enhanced our refuelling system to ease the period between sessions.
What we don’t know is how quick the competition will be – on indeed, who the direct competition will be. I can’t wait to find out.
In other news, Lenny Coleman is about to book his first test day in the Reynard 883 at Silverstone in April, and I’ll be there to help him get comfortable in and with the car. As with Kat Impey (see other news article), it’s unlikely he’ll be on the pace of the front runners in Classic 2000 from the word go, but he has the right mindset to make big strides in that direction. His first race in the Reynard will be Thruxton in May, using his trusty FVL at Brands Hatch.
