Just 11 days separate us from Round 2 of the 2010 Monoposto Racing Club championship at Thruxton on May 8th. After a fairly disastrous meeting at Brands (pole position, but failure to start), Team Omicron are eager to get their season off the starting blocks and onto the scoreboard.
We have never competed at Thruxton, and I have never even visited the circuit, so the learning curve will be very steep – not least because the circuit is one of the fastest in the UK. Indeed, top speeds will be higher here than anywhere despite the fact that Snetterton has the longest straight. This means that Thruxton has several very high speed corners, which will tax my bravery and commitment, as well as my ability to set up the car correctly.
Edit: Weather forecast is suggesting rain and drizzle – which could be wonderful!!!
Last year, the Monoposto Racing Club held a non-championship race at the circuit, and of the 2010 Dallaras only Jeremy Timms took part. His fastest lap (and record) was 1m15.3, at an average speed of 112.6mph over the 2.356 miles – the fastest average speed record in Mono.
As such, Jeremy will be a major force at this circuit, having had many laps worth of practice, and I’ll have to do my best to catch up. To that end, we’ve been modifying the setup to cope with the demands of this circuit – lower downforce, more top end power and gearing to suit the anticipated top speeds. In addition, we have maintained the improvements and fixes that we made to the starting of the car after Brands Hatch – improved ECU maps and a vastly better starter motor.
With the speed and experience of Jeremy Timms, it’s unlikely that we’ll be winning the race, but as ever I’ll give it my best shot.
The usual report, photos (subject to Andrew/NorwichPhoto), and videos (subject to camera system working) to follow, plus on the day I’ll try and keep a flow of Twitter tweets coming for those that are interested.
