Back in March we were full of optimism for the year ahead. We’d updated the car to comply with the 2010 regulations by fitting fuel injection and removing the flywheel ballast weight, as well as fitting some extra things to the car like engine oil coolers.  We had joined forces with Active Technology (AT Power) who supplied the throttle bodies, and with Specialist Components who supplied and mapped the ECU, as well as TE Systems who provided the wiring loom for the new ECU and injection system. The mapping work was carried out at Damico, and we also grateful to Scholar Engines for their time with flow testing, and the loan of alternative throttle bodies for testing purposes. SuperClutch remained onboard for 2010, providing a new, compact and arguably nicer clutch than AP (personal preference?), whilst Dogcam continued to provide the onboard camera equipment.  And finally (I think – I bet I’ve forgotten someone important) Cartek provided a rain light and switch for the final two meetings to assist them with marketing imagery.

Our Stats at the end of the year:

13 Races —– 151 Points
8 Pole Positions —– 5 Wins
5 Fastest Laps —– 4 Lap Records
11 Podiums
1 DNF (Did Not Finish)
1 DNS (Did Not Start)

Busy is my middle name. Our own car, the F398, is back together and has been running regularly whilst revised warm up and idle control routines have been added to the ECU, along with some analysis on the viability of fitting larger injectors to the throttle bodies – it is possible that the misfire we suffered from throughout 2010 was caused by the current injectors being unable to supply the additional fuel required during high rev throttle applications due to a lack of flow rate. The car now starts easily from very cold and from hot, and idles smoothly with good fuelling as the ambient and coolant temperatures increase. Until we get on the track in February (hopefully) we won’t be able to make much progress on the fuelling elsewhere, but by the end of 2010 it was pretty good. Since writing the first part of this paragraph, I have fitted larger injectors, which will give plenty of head-room with regards to injector opening times. I’ll also be lowering the fuel pressure to give the fuel pump an easier time, which will also give the battery an easier time. And I’ve fitted a fuel pressure sensor to the car, so that we can see how constant fuel pressure remains, particularly at high revs when fuel demand is high. And finally, I hope to have a ‘box of tricks’ on the car so that the ECU data (injector pulse widths, acceleration enrichment, spark advance, air temperature etc.) can be fed to the datalogger for post-race analysis. I WILL cure the misfire!!!!

The new Snetterton 300Here is a short video showing a simulated lap of the new Snetterton 300 circuit, from trackside and driver’s eye view. This video is NOT made by me. The lap is generated using the rFactor simulation, one of the worst modern ‘simulators’ in the world. Hence the appaulingly unrealistic driving lines and speeds (flat through T1, but braking in the Bombhole).  However, it does show (as is its intention) the new layout. A fiddly bit that all looks the same (like Rockingham’s infield), and a rather interesting final corner – braking from high speed whilst turning and changing direction. Crashes ahoy!

Following a lot more interest that I possibly imagined – half a dozen emails a day for two weeks – I have whittled through the applications and selected the ‘lucky’ candidate who will be joining us at race meetings in 2011 in the role of Race Engineer.

Chris Gomm, an Automotive Engineering student at the University of Leeds, is keen to learn and develop his skills ahead of an intended career in the motorsport world, and we are delighted to be able to offer him a place in our team, and hope that it will mutually beneficial.

Chris will be joining us at race meetings, the occasional test meeting if convenient, and prior to the start of the season to ‘meet the team’, and get accustomed to our working practices, as well as see the cars. We look forward to his contribution, not only in running a racecar for us in 2011, but in ideas on how to improve the teams and the cars.

Well done Chris!

After several weeks of negotiation, we are very excited to announce a new-for-2011 partnership between Omicron Motorsports and Tony Bishop.

Tony was in his first year of motorsport, driving his own Formula Renault 2.0 run by Antel Motorsport, but for 2011 has decided that his efforts would be better spent driving a car he knows can win races. He has therefore bought the ex-Jeremy Timms Dallara F397, a car that won the championship in 2008 and finished 2nd in 2009 and 2010, and has approached us to run it for him after our successful season this year.

Timms and Cliffe RivalryIn this weeks edition of Autosport, on page 130, is another mention. This time, Jeremy and I have been recognised for having one of the top 10 rivalries of 2010 in national club motorsport!!!

“Jeremy Timms has been the benchmark in Mono 2000 for several seasons, while Tristan Cliffe is the coming man. The Dallara drivers put on some fine duels and shared the wins, with Cliffe emerging as champ.”
