It was a relatively easy build up to this event, the second non-championship meeting of the year, as Tony was the only Omicron driver in his Dallara F397.  Along with a few tweaks to the setup of the car we also changed brake pad material to help him get more confidence on the brakes.

Qualifying, however, was a bit of a disaster. After spending a few laps bedding in the brakes, he started the lean on the car more and more, but a red flag meant that his rhythm was broken. At the restart of the session he was trying immediately, and set a lap time that was good enough for 9th on the grid.  The next lap was even better, and it was looking like he’d improve considerably, but a loose wire on the fuel tank stopped the fuel pump and he coasted to a halt.  That left him 42nd for the second race!! Had the wire not come loose (actually, it was receeding pins in the connector – what are the chances!!), I think he’d have been 7th on the grid for race 1 and probably around 9th in race 2… such is motorsport!

The final round of the year was held at a chilly Silverstone, utilising the National circuit configuration. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was thinking ahead to round 1 at Brands Hatch…

Going into the event I had the luxury of an 8 point lead in the standings, which meant I could happily accept two 2nd place finishes as long as I got the fastest lap for one race. But the trouble with motorsport is that it’s difficult to go slower than you can (mistake creep in as you deviate from your usual rhythm), and virtually impossible to go faster than you are able to. Maybe I wouldn’t be able to keep up and get fastest lap. Maybe Richard Purcell would be quicker. Maybe something would break on the car. Maybe Jeremy would crash. All I could do, in my role as driver, was do my best…

Saturday was cold and wet to begin with. The smaller engined Mono cars (I playfully refer to them as the MiniMonos) were out first, and the tyre choice was divided between wets and slicks. Fortunately, by the time we were due out the track was mostly dry, and we went out with dry-weather slick tyres.

Since Croft, and the two wins we managed there, we’ve not had much to write about really… We pulled out of the non-championship Silverstone GP (Bridge circuit) meeting as we’d rather wear the car out for the championship, and as the weather was awful it might well have been a very sensible decision.

So instead of a one week turnaround (actually it would have been more like two days!) and a two week turnaround, we’ve had three weeks to prepare the car.

There hasn’t be that much to do. The ECU is on it’s (hopefully) final iteration of fuelling map. The toe-in on the left rear wheel that has been about 0.25mm out all season is now spot on. The rain light housing is repaired and looks nice once again. The oil pressure sensor has been replaced because of some funny looking traces it was giving out. The batteries have been charged up. Any play (and there wasn’t much) has been taken out of the steering balljoints. The wings have had the angle reduced a smidgen.  The brakes and clutch have been bled. The corner weights have been made spot on (normally I’d bias them by 10lbs, so the inner wheel is heavier, but Silverstone has few corners and there are important ones in the left and right direction, so equal corner weights are more critical here than most circuits). And… erm, that’s about it really.  I’m sure we’ve done other things – cleaned stuff, checked tightnesses, improved little brackets or painted little bits, but nothing really exciting I’m afraid.

The car is in good condition as far as we can tell. So hopefully, for better or for worse, Jeremy Timms and I can decide the championship on track with no silly retirements for either of us. And one has to hope that the slower cars don’t have too much influence on the outcome. Both of us have had a fairly equal share of bad luck now, and I wouldn’t wish any more on either team.

It’s exciting, but quite nerve wracking at the same time…  Tweets, photos, videos, comments and all that as and when.

As usual I’ve not been particularly slick in writing this article, so apologies if you’ve been waiting for it (unlikely). It was our 3rd meeting of the year, having missing Anglesey and Donington, and also marked our first foray with the Dallara in the wet, other than the shakedown testing in April when sorting initial problems with the car was more important than speed.  It turned out to be reasonably successful, but I had my doubts about that at several points during the day.  This was down to a combination of things, but the resolution was to do with considered changes to the car, and to the driver…

It’s been a while since I wrote anything for your enjoyment. Mostly this is because I’ve been involved in a play at a new theatre group – Cold Comfort Farm, by Sewell Barn Theatre. They had me rehearsing 4 or 5 nights per week for several weeks, but the result was a great show and a full audience on every night. Hurrah!  The other reason is that there hasn’t been much worth writing about…

I last wrote to inform you that the Donington was cancelled due to rain and track drainage problems.  That was disappointing, but not as disappointing as being told that the replacement round was to be held at the British F3 meeting at Donington on the last night of Cold Comfort Farm’s performances, and as such I couldn’t make it.  I gather it was a nice day that went well, with Jeremy Timms taking a very dominant victory in his car (with engine now fixed) ahead of Neil Harrison.  As such, Neil is sitting pretty with 82 points (with one round left to drop), Jeremy is on 60 points (with no rounds left to drop) and I’m on 40 points (with no rounds left to drop).  Therefore it seems fairly unlikely that the championship is within reach unless I win every race, get all remaining fastest laps, and Jeremy and Neil fall off once or twice – and that ain’t gonna happen.
